Media and Communications

The Media and Communications Law section welcomes members with interests in any aspect of media law or regulation. We have members who are interested in the law as it applies to media content and the infrastructure and networks through which content is delivered. We are also interested in a wide range of different approaches to the study of media and communications law. Our section members have done work which is doctrinal, philosophical, comparative and socio-legal. Our members also have interests in a wide range of different regulatory tools and techniques, including self-regulation and co-regulation. The framework in which media and communications law operates is characterised by rapid technological developments. We are keen to encourage members who may have an interest in new technologies in the media, such as content delivery via the internet alongside members who might be researching in more ‘traditional’ approaches to the subject. The topics that our members have considered in the past include political theory and freedom of expression, constitutional and legal doctrine relating to topics such as privacy, defamation, contempt of court, obscenity, and freedom of information, journalistic ethics, audio-visual programme content, competition law and structural regulation, co-regulation and self-regulation, public service broadcasting, telecommunications, pay-TV and the “new media”, Internet content, copyright and European and international obligations relating to communications
