Call for Nominations for SLS Officers and Committee Members

The SLS invites nominations for the following posts:

  • Vice-President Elect (from October 2020, to be Vice President from October 2021 and President from October 2022);
  • Honorary Secretary (from October 2021);
  • Honorary Membership Secretary (from October 2021);
  • Four Ordinary Members of Executive (from October 2020);
  • Three members of the Equality Diversity and Inclusion Committee (from October 2020);
  • One member of the Research Sub-committee (from October 2020);
  • One member of the Libraries Sub-committee (from October 2020).

The SLS encourages applications from members from all genders, ethnicities, regions and types of institution. BAME members of the SLS are particularly encouraged to apply.

All nominations for SLS Officers will be considered, and appointments made at the Society’s AGM in September 2020, by the members present thereat.   All nominations for ordinary members of the Executive Committee and Committee/Sub-committee members will be considered, and appointments made, by Council at its meeting during the virtual Annual Conference hosted by the University of Exeter in September 2020.

(i) OFFICERS

Under r 15 of the Society’s Rules, the President is elected two years in advance, becoming first Vice President Elect, then Vice President, and then President. We are therefore now looking to elect the President for 2022/23.

Other officers are elected a year in advance and are subject to re-election on an annual basis. There is a convention that they will be available to serve for a period of five years, subject to being re-elected annually during that time.

The following will be standing for re-election in September 2020:

Professor Paula Giliker (Hon Secretary);
Professor Duncan Sheehan (Hon Membership Secretary);
Professor Colin Reid (Convenor for Scotland);
Dr Desmond Ryan (Convenor for Ireland);

The five-year term of the following post holders will end in September 2021:

Professor Paula Giliker (Honorary Secretary)
Professor Duncan Sheehan (Honorary Membership Secretary)

Nominations for any of the above officer posts (Vice-President Elect, Hon Secretary and Hon Membership Secretary) must have a proposer and seconder and be signed by the candidate. 

They must be returned to the Hon Secretary via the Administrative Secretary (Rosa Bladon, admin@legalscholars.ac.uk) by Monday 3 August 2020, 17:00hrs (BST).

(ii) EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEMBERS

In addition to the officers of the Society, the Executive Committee has nine elected members, three of whom must be “recent” members of the Society (being members of recent professional standing who, at the date of their election, have fewer than eight years membership).

The Committee meets three times a year in London (November, January, and May) and the Society pays travelling expenses.

Members are elected for an initial term of three years and may serve one further term of three years.

In making appointments, Council is required, so far as practicable, to procure “a reasonable balance in such appointments, taking account of factors such as gender, ethnicity, regional representation, type of institution and subject section representation”.

(iii) SUB-COMMITTEE MEMBERS

There are vacancies on the Equality Diversity and Inclusion Committee and Libraries Sub-Committee. These are open to all members.

There is also a vacancy on the Research Sub-Committee. The convention is that the members of this committee are full Professors.

Appointments are normally made by Council and the usual term of office is three years.
