Further Details

Dear Member

I am writing to you to concerning the Society's arrangements for updating and publishing the 2009/10 Directory.  Production is planned to take place early in the new year with copies arriving in March 2010.

This message is intended for three groups of members:

1                    those who are members of law schools that have a constituency representative

2                    those who are members of law schools that do not have a constituency representative, but where there is an 'unofficial' representative

3                    those who are listed in the 2008/09 Directory as 'other ordinary' or 'associate members'.

Groups 1 and 2

At its meeting at the Keele Annual Conference in September 2009 Council agreed to continue the procedure for updating that has worked very successfully for the past two years.  That is, that where possible, the task of updating the 2008/09 Directory should be performed by the constituency representatives, who are best placed to ensure accuracy for their law school. Local rather than central updating means that we can push back a couple of months from the end of September to the end of November to capture these updates.  This means that the 2009/10 Directory can contain details of all members joining or moving to new posts at the start of the current academic year.  It also shortens the turn around time needed to prepare each constituency's entry for the publisher.

In the case of law schools that do not have a Council representative, SLS contacts were nevertheless able to assist with this exercise.  With one or two exceptions this arrangement worked well last year, for which the Directory team is grateful and thanks both the official and the unofficial representatives.

The purpose of this email is, first, to advise you of the arrangements for this year, and, secondly, to encourage you to provide your constituency representative (official or unofficial) with your own updated details.   Where I do not have a contact at a particular law school, I will contact the Head of School directly.

I will shortly be sending the WORD file on which your law school's entry for 2008/09 was based. For speed and accuracy, I ask that you advise your official or unofficial constituency representatives or your Head of School of any further updates; please do not send them to me.  The idea is that all corrections are made to that one file and thus included in your law school's return.  I ask representatives to return their corrected versions as soon as they are able to do so and in any event no later than 27 November.

Please note that the Directory will not be proof read in its entirety.  There should be no loss of accuracy in the transfer from the WORD file to the files the typesetters use.  The text that your constituency representative sends to me is the text that will appear in the Directory.

Group 3

I have received some corrections and updates from members who fall into the two categories within this group.  Members who fall within the 'other ordinary' or 'associate member' categories who have corrections or updates that they wish to be made, please contact me with them as soon as they are able to do so and in any event no later than Friday 20 November.  Information received after that date will be held over until the 2010/11 Directory.

May I thank all of the Society's members in advance for their co-operation on this important matter.
