What are the Sections?

The Subject Sections are the very heart of the Society. They seek to promote the development of the subject through meetings and discussion, most notably at the annual conference. The Subject Sections stimulate publication by their members and have an important role to play in formulating the responses of the Society to law reform proposals. Further details are available below. The Subject Sections of the Society are open to any member who is actively interested in the subject. A member of the Society may join a Section simply by asking the Convenor to add their name to the Mailing List.

The Society currently has 28 subject sections for members with particular interests. These organise seminars, often at the annual conference and on some other occasion during the year. The Secretary of Subject Sections and other officers of the Society hold annual meetings with the Law Commission.

Who are the Convenors?

Each Subject Section is headed by a Convenor who is one of the members of the Section appointed as such by the Executive. In general, each appointment is made for a renewable period of three years. Terms of office are indicated in the Directory. The Convenor will arrange for a meeting of the Section at the Society's annual conference, and may arrange other meetings during the year. Further details on the programme for the annual conference can be found below.

How Do I Establish a New Section?

Where there are nine members of the Society willing to support it, a proposal for the formation of a new Section may be made to Council after consultation with the Sections Secretary. The Society is not currently seeking to increase the number of sections.
