Debate: The Algorithmic Battle

  • Monday 4th June 2018
  • Room CCE1 – 105. Northumbria University

The debate is organised by The Northumbria Internet and Society Research Interest Group (NINSO) and two world-leading experts will fight to defend their views on a controversial issue, i.e. algorithmic transparency and accountability.

Algorithms are increasingly used to decide whether we are a threat to society, get a loan, cross a border, etc.

What can we do to protect ourselves? Do we have a right to the explanation of the algorithmic decision? Is the new General Data Protection Regulation fit for purpose?

Speakers

  • Professor Lilian Edwards, Chair of e-Governance @ University of Strathclyde
  • Gianclaudio Malgieri, PhD Researcher @ Vrije Universiteit Brussel
