During the Conference there will be three SLS lectures to be delivered by distinguished speakers – the two foremost female judges in the common law world, Baroness Hale of Richmond and Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin of the Canadian Supreme Court (both former academics and honorary members of the Society), and the distinguished historian from the University of Sheffield, Professor Sir Ian Kershaw.

Baroness Hale is the first woman law lord. She is also the youngest member of the Appellate Committee. Baroness Hale was previously an academic at the University of Manchester.

Rt. Hon. Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin
'Demystifying Judging: How Judges Think'

Chief Justice McLachlin, read philosophy and law at the University of
Alberta, and was called to the bar in Alberta in 1969. After graduation
McLachlin worked in practice until 1974 when she was appointed as an Assistant
Professor and subsequently a full Professor at the University of British
Columbia.
In 1981 McLachlin was appointed to the Supreme Court of British Columbia. She
subsequently sat in the Court of Appeal of British Columbia before being
appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia in 1988.
In 1989 McLachlin was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada, the third woman
to be so appointed. In 2000 she was sworn in as Chief Justice of Canada. Chief
Justice McLachlin is the first woman to be appointed Chief Justice of Canada.
